Great views, lovely and clean. The offer of a little jug of fresh milk to go in the fridge for your morning tea was a nice touch too. The full English breakfast was delicious, although more toast for both that and the poached eggs on toast would have been good. Really welcoming place to stay

My husband and I stayed at the Pheasant for one night on dinner/bed/breakfast basis. The landlady and all staff we encountered were very friendly. The food was of a very high standard (and lots of choice given it was part of a 'deal') and the rooms finished very well. We stayed in the Captain Oates room (a local to the pub) and the copies of Scott's diaries and the press cuttings from the time were a very polished touch. We would definitely go again.

We had a lovely stay at the Pheasant. Our room was styled beautifully and had wonderful views across the countryside. Breakfast was lovely too. I’d like to say a big thank you to Diana the land lady at the Pheasant as we were staying as we had a wedding to go to about 5 miles away and the staff tried their hardest to get us a taxibut couldn’t so Diana kindly gave us a lift she went above & beyond and we are truly grateful. We looked forward to our fourth stay, and were not disappointed. As we have come to expect, we had a lovely welcome from Sue, who could not do enough for us, and Sarah, whose calm and friendly service, in the face of busy evenings, was a joy. We were sad to hear that she is leaving to pursue other opportunities, and we wish her all the very best, hoping that we will see her again in the future. It was a shame that Diana was away, but her Pheasant was in good hands. It was a lovely stay, and we will be back.

This is a real gem, tucked out of the way in the Essex countryside. The rooms are in a block behind the pub over looking open countryside. Plenty of parking and the room was spacious clean and well equipped. Reception is I. The bar and we were made to feel very welcome and were shown the room by the young lady. It’s a pub that does have a good local following but this added to the friendly atmosphere. We had booked to eat in the restaurant and we’re not disappointed with the quality homemade food. My wife had the pie of the day which was well filled with chicken and I had the lamb chops which were huge and beautifully cooked. I slept very well as the area is very peaceful with zero noise from passing traffic. Breakfast was again excellent but I didn’t see an option for cereal which there probably is but we had the full English. Fabulous friendly staff added to our stay and made us feel mostwelcome. I would stay here again.

Arrived Shortly after 3pm. Check in was easy at the bar but we decided to chill and have a drink at the bar. Well, it was such a good atmosphere that we stayed for another and then another. Four drins in we decided to go to the room and what a lovely room it was. New building at the rear of the pub up a flight of stairs. Everything you require was in the room and it was spotless.A quick shower and we were back downstairs to continue where we had left off. Had a lovely meal (Lamb chops which was a special for the night). It was lovely and the atmosphere was buzzing especially as it was only early April! Nice to see an independent small country pub doing so well in these troubled times.Breakfast was served between 8.30-9.30 and was nicely cooked, served with Orange Juice, tea/coffeee etc.Would certainly return again.

I thought the stay was very nice but the room did need updating in some areas. The bedroom would have been much nicer with a wooden floor rather than carpet, which felt a bit tired and dated. The room was very pleasant but dusty in some areas around, the picture frames especially. The breakfast was reasonable but poached eggs were hard. I was not asked how I liked them, so assumed they would be soft so my fault too really for not asking. The scenery from the room was beautiful and tranquil.Bed was very clean and comfortable with good pillows. The restaurant food was lovely and did not get too full as there are only a few seating areas. The hotel owner Diana was pleasant and personally came to my room to ask how she could help as she was having trouble with the phones. The waitress Sue was really friendly too and stopped to have a chat with us. Overall I would stay again.

This is the third time we have stayed with Diana and her team, and we were very happy with everything. There is a lovely friendly feel to life at the Pheasant, but the service standards are high, very well serviced room, excellent food and drink. Loved the room with a view over the Stour valley.Shame the mist came in each morning, so view was a long time coming.Food good but portions could be smaller, as when dessert came, didn't appreciate it as much as we should.Noisy bar the first night, with a lot of loud swearing, which we could hear quite clearly in the restaurant.Ate in the back room the second night, which was a lot quieter.Maybe warn guests about the bar noise!Small things which were not so good.Fresh milk given to us on first day but on second day, it had gone off.We should have asked for it to be replenished but thought it would have been done automatically by cleaning staff.Couldn't get the safe to work, but maybe it was our problem, not sure.On the plus side, the room was lovely, food very good and the staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Food was cracking and staff generally were very friendly.Room was spacious and was so nice to have a fridge and be given fresh milk rather than UHT stuff. Breakfast lady was lovely!Only a couple of small things - keeping the door open from the outside area was nice for air but horrible for non-smokers to keep getting smoke wafting in whilst eating. Room and outside area needs a bit of TLC as a little unloved in places but overall lovely stay.

We stayed at the Pheasant and Coach House for two nights in the Thomas Gainsborough Room.It was absolutely wonderful the room was huge with a separate dressing area and walk in shower. Also patio door opening out onto a seating area. The welcome we received was exceptional with Diana making us feel extremely welcome from the outset.Throughout our stay we received such excellent service from the friendly and efficient staff - I wont name them here in case I miss anyone out and they were all equally as welcoming and friendly and always with a ready smile. The food was amazing, beautifully cooked and although not a huge choice on the menu what we chose was beautifully cooked and presented throughout. The local people visiting the Pheasant were very friendly too and were keen to know that we had driven a long way (Portsmouth) to stay there. They gave us tips on where to visit whilst there which we did, visiting Bury St Edmonds, around 10 miles away and well worth a visit.Lavenham is a lovely quaint historic village, and again not to be missed.I can highly recommend The Pheasant for it's beautiful setting, historic background, not forgetting the amazing food, and the extremely friendly, professional and welcoming owner (Diana) and her staff.Well done to you all you are a credit to Gestingthorpe! We will definitely be back. :)

The prices for the drinks were also well priced. We were made to feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff.Good information for seeing the surrounding area was given by Diana the owner. We loved the fact that we could have a lovely meal and a good few drinks and the just pop across the yard to the coach house to our room.Would certainly stay again.

Lovely room, excellent value for money and if reviewing the room only would give 10/10.For us though we felt the food didn't live up to expectations based on the reviews. Also had an issue being woken up by other guests returning after midnight and hammering on the external door for someone to let them in.I had to get out of bed and go and let them in! Not the hotels fault although maybe if it had been better explained that their room key also opened the front door this wouldn't have happened. On the plus side the staff and locals were friendly and welcoming and I think maybe we were just a bit unlucky in our experience on this visit.

This was a last-minute booking, made after our caravan trip had to be cancelled. We were celebrating an anniversary. We really liked the website and the presence on Booking.Com. Value for money was exceptional and we wanted the luxury room with country view, King bed and jacuzzi. We were not disappointed. A friendly welcome, clean and well-presented facilities in a rural location. The evening meal in the restaurant with log-burner and warm vibe was well up to expectations, a sirloin steak among the highlights ... and an interesting and enticing wine-list. The 'full English breakfast' was accompanied by first rate coffee (not often one writes that in Britain). Overall, a really delightful experience - the owner is personally present and evidently sees to the comfort of her guests. We hope to return.

Had a very enjoyable overnight stay with friends. Rooms were comfortable with great views over the fields.A good range of teas and coffees were provided and pleasing to note a safe in the room for any valuables. The shower room was modern and the usual shampoos etc. were available. We were on a Secret Escape deal which included dinner and the menu provided had a good range, nice starters and the steaks were really good and well cooked. The cheese board was fine. Breakfast was good and set us up for our return. The only concern arose when we paid our bill the next day. We were charged a £5 supplement for each steak, which was not detailed on the menu and the supplement for the cheeseboard was raised from the £2 mentioned on the menu to £3. We did not want to make a fuss as we had had a very good time the day before. Perhaps the menus should be updated.

Covid measures felt safe but were not too obtrusive.Had a very enjoyable evening.Food was delicious, quality wine list.Breakfast very good and served at the table, good quality and lovely fresh orange juice. This really is a lovely place to stay - quiet, friendly, good food - and lots of places to explore nearby. Our room - Captain Oates - is spacious, comfortable and well supplied for guests - with a quiet fridge, lovely decor and big bed. The spa bath is fun! But it's rather gloomy, with one small window in a huge room - so you can't benefit from the relaxing view over fields. The bathroom is a lovely big space with plenty of room for bath and large shower - but bath and shower controls are very difficult to use - needs a lot of strength to change the temperature. There's a small wash basin - no problem with that - but the tap is large and water overshoots the basin when you turn it on which is a bit of a pain. And with a small basin and chunky tap there's no space to fill a kettle directly from the tap. So - definitely a good place to staybut Captain Oates needs some rescuing....

I have to say that I really enjoyed my stay at The Pheasant, it was a small detour away from the major towns nearby where i had business appts with but well worth the few miles. The room I booked was excellent, modern, well appointed, comfortable and well thought out. Diana the host was really great and I felt well looked after. My evening meal and breakfast was outstanding and will definatley be booking again very soon - and do not hesitate to recommend them.

We recently stayed at The Pheasant, very friendly welcome from Diana, we had a complimentary glass of prosecco, then we were shown to our room, Captain Oates, amazing room, very spacious & spotlessly clean. Our evening dinner was just amazing, the whole menu was perfect for us & after much consideration, the starters we chose Liver Pate & homemade soup were very tasty & for mains I had pork belly & my wife had the Lamb, both amazing dishes, rarely do you find a restaurant where every course was just as good as the next, we had that at the Pheasant & the service was excellent too. Breakfast followed our comfy stay the next morning,a lovely full English breakfast perfectly cooked with quality ingredients & pastries & cheese/ham & cereals too. Needless to say we will be back, even if its only for sunday lunch, Diana is a very lucky lady cos boy can her hubby James cook!! Thanks to you both & we will see you soon & keep up the excellent work, we've already told many people & we've only been home a day!!

Pub was easy enough to find by using the post code on the sat nav. Welcome was warm and inviting. Check in was easy, but I am unsure of how many other guests were staying. Bedroom was clean and tidy. Bed was comfy. Bathroom had 1 light out on the vanity mirror. And mould growing in one corner of the bathroom. Also only having lavender shower gels andshampoo isn't ideal for a man. A more neutral smelling product would be better. Room wasn't huge. Maybe a smaller bed instead of a huge 4 poster bed would be better. Very little room to get dressed. No full length mirror in the room. Breakfast times very short 830/930. On a Saturday was disappointing considering a lot of their trade is weddings where people like to enjoy themselves. Check out simple and effective. I did feel it was slightly over priced. £175 seems a little steep. Maybe more like £120-£140. Average. 4 stars.

I wanted to find a venue to celebrate my 40th that offered locally sourced fresh food, a nice surrounding and possibility to stay overnight. The rooms were beautiful - we occupied 4 of the 5 on offer and all were stunning. The food was out of this world - so fresh and tasty. It really was the perfect birthday. Thanks so much to the team at The Phesant. We will be back without doubt!

Booked a couple of days break to celebrate my husbands birthday. We were really lucky with beautiful weather and were very happy with the accommodation at the Pheasant. You are housed in a separate annex in themed rooms named after famous locals and we were in John Constable. The room was spotless and spacious with a four poster very comfortable bed. The bathroom had a large shower which we loved as we prefer showers to baths. Water was supplied daily and real milk which was in the fridge and also home made cookies. Lovely touches. Breakfast and evening meals are excellent cooked using locally sourced food. We would be more than happy to visit the Pheasant again.

We had booked an overnight stay to celebrate an anniversary- though we don't live too far away-on the basis of the fabulous reviews for the food. Certainly there is a lovely atmosphere. Diana and her staff were very friendly and welcoming, our room was stunning with fabulous views with great facilities- fresh milk and cookies/ coffee and teas- fab bathroom and a comfortable 4 poster bed. We'd ordered champagne which was on ice waiting for us. However we were disappointed with our evening meal. The wild mushroom starter had sold out, there was only one caramelised belly pork portion left - and it was still early on a Saturday night. We both had grilled goats cheese salad starrter which was nice. I had duck with chilli and chocolate sauce, garlic mash, and my husband had the lamb with black currant sauce with crushed garlic potatoes, both dishes seemed very bland and neither of the sauces stood out though the meats were nicely cooked- the lamb was very tender - my duck could have been a little more crisp though it was nice and pink- but each was served just with broccoli as the veg which was disappointing- a variety would have been much more interesting.Pudding redeemed the meal with my choice of cheese platter of 5 British mostly local cheeses with little crudités and biscuits- truly this made the meal for me - it was lovely. My husband had sticky toffee pudding which he said was very nice. Breakfast was good with lovely fresh fruit salad and choices of cereals and cooked breakfasts. Overall an enjoyable stay but the price was a bit hefty for dinner/ B & B package considering the meal didn't have the wow factor that we were expecting- because everything else did!

Superlatives are required to describe this place it was that good. On our trip to East Anglia we stayed at two places that could not have been more different. The first a "luxury country house" in Norfolk that was anything but and this place which describes itself as a Pub restaurant but is much more than that. Indeed The Pheasant could justifiably use the word luxurious because it is so good. Welcoming, warm, clean, friendly, excellentmeals, great breakfast, luxurious accommodation and great value for money. Will go back and will recommend

Theyoung female waitresses gave great customer service and attention to detail. We stayed in a ground floor room that was very comfortable and spacious. We were attending a wedding at Castle Hedingham and w hen our taxi failed to materialise, James, Chef, Gardener and joint proprietor saved the day by taking us in his Porche(2 trips). We cannot praise this establishment highly enough.

This pub/hotel combo is one of the nicest hotel experiences we have had. The staff and owners were so friendly and the attention to detail is an example to larger hotels - Extra blanket if you do not like duvets, fresh milk in the room refigerator and the room decor excellent. We will definitely be returning - soon I hope.

Our 3 night stay at The Pheasant began with a warm welcome from Diana in their beautiful 500 year old pub. Our accommodation, which is only 4 years old and about 20 steps away, was clean, fresh, spacious and had lovely views of the countryside. We enjoyed delicious meals cooked be James each night, after exploring the local sights by day. Breakfast was also a meal to remember!I would recommend staying at The Pheasant to anyone who is thinking of travelling in this part of England. It's a wonderful base in friendly, relaxing surroundings.

My wife and I stayed with two friends for one night whilst passing through. The young lady who was behind the bar when we arrived was really welcoming and seemd to take pleasure in showing us to our room. I travel a lot with work and this is the FIRST time that the person showing me to my room has specifically asked if either of us is allergic to feathers and then replaced two down pillows with synthetic as we unpacked. The bar is also very welcoming and my wife and I both enjoyed the complimentary drink on arrival.Dinner selections were excellent too, the chef certainly knows how to prepare, cook and serve game and my wife found the mushrooms on ciabatta faultless. The wine list is as good as you'll find in any "gastropub" and the prices are extremely fair. The hospitalityeven extended to providing a full cooked breakfast an hour earlier than the kitchen usually opens because we had an early appointment to make.We will be finding an excuse to tour the area just so we can stay here again.

We had two nights at The Pheasant. My partner is wheelchair-bound, and so we stayed in the Mark Catesby Room, which is fully designed for those with disability issues and also beautifully designed and appointed, with French windows opening to a lovely seating area and a vast expanse of fields beyond. Hosts Diana and James were enormously welcoming, and the food was exquisite: beautifully conceived and prepared, with a wide selection. We left refreshed and restored! One of our very best hotel stays in the past few years.

This was perfection. The rooms are stunning, large and beautifully equipped, better than many 5star hotels. Our hosts are delightful, friendly helpful and welcoming. The food from a sensible size menu is perfectly cooked and presented with a reasonably priced wine list.

There is a very friendly welcome here and a personal touch in all aspects f service. The rooms are stylish and modern with excellent facilities. The pub has excellent home cooking using local produce and vegetables and eggs from the garden. In a tranquil country setting it would be hard to find a nicer place for a short treat.

A wonderful hotel that I would recommend to anyone. It was our wedding night, and the hosts stayed up late to check us in and show us our room. Our fantastic chef made us a delicious breakfast even though he was recovering from surgery. The atmosphere is very relaxed and warm, with great views of the surrounding countryside, lovely gastropub, and a well kept garden.

A really good establishment. Accomodation was excellent in Oates Suite with quality fittings and provided everything to accommodate my disability. The business is very much food led and was first class in terms of variety and quality.Under this format the scoring system will only grade 4 out of 5. Personally I would score it 4.5 out of 5.Because it is food led the wet trade is very much secondary. Our meal on the first night was great but it was unhelpful to be hurried away at the end of our meal as the table was booked out to another party. Particularly so as the premises were so busy that there was not even some where to sit for a nightcap.

Very comfy room with thoughtful touches like REAL milk in the mini-fridge instead of the usual horrid UHT capsules. My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous dinner and an excellent Argentinian Malbec - the wine list has been carefully put together by someone who knows what they're doing. This is pub food as it should be - the best local and fresh seasonalproduce, beautifully cooked. The Pheasant avoids the usual mistake of amny 'gourmet pubs' that try to do 'fine dining' and failing miserably. The food is spot on - my wife's fetta, fig & serrano ham salad was delicious and my home-made salman pate was light, fluffy and scrumptious. I had the best sirloin steak I've ever had and Debbi made short work of a very large cheeseboard. Puds looked fab, but we just could not have managed another bite! Staff were lovely, very friendly but also very professional 10/10 guys! Breakfast was fab too! If you're after a peaceful, country spot and a relaxed evening with great food, then The Pheasant delivers on it's promises. Recommended.

There was also a large double shower, and the bathroom was very modern and well appointed. What a great experience! We stayed here as a prelude to attending a family wedding at a local wedding venue. We arrived to a glass of prosecco and a warm welcome on a wet winters day.We were shown our room which was definitely boutique hotel style and very comfortable and warm.Having sorted ourselves into the room we went back inside the bar as we had booked for an evening meal.We were a little early but seated at our table straight away and the waitress couldn't have been more helpful. The food was really excellent and we over indulged with three courses plus dessert wine &c.We had a great nights sleep although had to open a window as it was slightly too hot in the room, not a bad side to err on though.( we probably should have mentioned this)Breakfast Next morning was just right and freshly cooked. We set off that morning feeling we had had a great experience with excellent accommodation and really good food. The wedding venue we went onto could do with some pointers from the Pheasant we later discovered....

An exceptional welcome greeted us at The Pheasant. Apart from a drink and guide around the room, we had a careful map of local walks to take the dog. The food was good and the pork belly and steak were appreciated particularly. Our breakfast eggs tasted of freshness, whilst the honey for the toast was divine. And then we were given directions for the next leg of our journey.....great.

Our trip from Lancashire to Essex for a wedding meant finding a B&B via the internet. We couldn't have stumbled upon a better choice and were amazed at the delicious dinner on arrival, lovely room and friendly welcome. We had the room with Access facilities (it was the only one left at the time of booking) and it was really well appointed and great for those with needs as well as those without - with French doors to the sunny terrace overlooking an enormous cornfield. I have been trying to think of an excuse to book all five rooms for a family gathering and dinner! A pity we are so far away - but if you are nearer, or coming for a special occasion or even a week, don't miss it. Thanks for making our weekend so memorable. We hope to return for longer.

A charming pub, family run, offering highest comfort in the well equiped rooms and a warm and friendly welcome. We came from Austria and we have been to many places before but this is one of the very best in whole UK.The pub is tastefully decorated with antique furniture and nice artwork. You can feel the atmosphere and history of the pub without having the dirt and dust of the last hundred years on the tables, the walls, the chairs and the floor as the bar and the restaurant has been looked after very well. The freshly cooked dinner made by the chef himself was excellent. So the breakfast with fresh fruits and even lovely English cheese. The room was decorated in moderen style, had an excellent bed and offered all the modern comfort (TV, Power Shower, WiFi) that is needed for a pleasent stay.Thank you for the warm welcome. We enjoyed the stay in this very dog friendly inn and we had lovely walks in the fields behind the inn. We´ll definitely come again.Kind regards, Michael + Renate (Klosterneuburg/Austria)

We arrived on Friday which was cold and raining so it was lovely to walk into the Pheasant and sit infront of thewood burners with our complementary glass of prosecco before we went to our room.Accommodation was excellent, spacious, clean and very pleasant and the bed was soooo comfy.Luckily the next morning brought completely different weather so we couldwalk out of our bedroom and were confronted with a beautiful view across the countryside andwe were able to explore some of the surrounding CountrysideincludingBelchamp Hall which featured in the Lovejoy TV series. We would highly recommend The pheasant;the food was excellent and James and Diana are engaging hosts.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Pheasant. Our room was comfortable and tastefully designed, the food was delicious and the location tranquil. Our hosts were warm yet professional and we would definitely return. We feel that The Pheasant provides good value for money. Our only small areas for improvement would be for the wireless to be accessible from the room(John Constable). Also our room wasn't ready when we arrived, even though we made specific arrangements on the booking form. These things would not prevent us recommending the hotel to others however.

We stayed at The Pheasant on the night before the owners were due to go on holiday, so it would have been understandable had things been a little disorganised. It was not so.The room - Captain Oates - was spotless, comfortable and well appointed. The food and drink were remarkable, from a wonderfully bitter Pheasant Ale, made with smoked hops (I know that sounds odd, but try some) to Sausage and Mash that was as good as any I've ever had.In addition, both James and Diana somehow found time to chat, and James is a really interesting guy to chat with.We look forward to a return visit.Dave & Maggie Trahar

The breakfast included was of good quality, with plenty of choice for everyone. We ate at the restaurant in the evening and were impressed with the food, value and service. From the moment we arrived at the pheasant pub we were impressed with the service at hotel check in we were given a glass of chilled wine and on entering our room told everything we needed to know.We would recommend this hotel/ restaurant for a nice relaxing break but feel that the rooms may be a little over priced.

I discovered The Pheasant via a Google search and was delighted to find such superior accommodation well away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I had four glorious days being looked after by Diane and James, they certainly make you very welcome. My room was large and extremely comfortable, the bed and bathroom were fabulous.
